Math: Retest on Volume and Solid figures tomorrow
Language: Spelling/Vocabulary test tomorrow
Things are winding down! SAGE testing is over! We tried our best and worked really hard, but school is not over yet. We have two more weeks after this one and there are a lot of things going on.
We are collecting pizza money for the last day of school because the cafeteria will be closed. If you can spare it, our goal is $3 per student. All kids will get pizza, regardless of donation.
Tomorrow is the fifth grade talent show and each class will be sending one entry to the school-wide talent show on the last day of school. I think my kids will be singing "Let It Go" as a group entry. Should be fun!

Language: New spelling list and vocabulary lists, test Friday
Math: Test Remediations! -due Thursday, along with the retest.
We are nearing the end of the Geometry unit and have begun the unit on Solids figures. We need to double-up on math right now in order to teach the entire 5th grade curriculum in the specified time frame. In order to do this, I am teaching math in the morning and in the afternoon. The subject matter is different enough to allow this doubling up. In other words, one topic does not rely on the other being taught first.
News: I have accepted another position within the district. Starting next year, I will be an Education Technology Specialist (aka "Ed Tech"). While it is uncertain which schools I'll be at next year, there is a good chance that Midvalley will be one of them. I have had a wonderful time teaching the students of Midvalley over the last eight years and will miss them deeply. I hope our paths continue to cross in the future! Thank you all for a great run teaching fifth grade!

Math: Test remediations assigned, due Wednesday. Retest Thursday
This is a re-repost from September 3rd:
Parents: This is how I do math tests. After completing a unit in math, I give a test. This test is meticulously gone over by me, making comments when I can, in the hope that the student reads what I have written and learns from their mistakes. This is very time-consuming. Taken seriously, this is a powerful learning tool. No grade is given. Test remediation is then assigned, where the student must:

Language: New spelling list and vocabulary words. Test Friday
Math: test today on topic 9. Test tomorrow on topic 10. We taught these two units together, but we still have to take the tests separately.
We will be doing the state keyboarding assessment over the next few days. The goal for 5th grade is 25 wpm with two errors or less. Tomorrow is "Career Day." Kids will meet adults that will discuss their careers and how they apply their school learning to everyday life. It really gives the kids something to consider as they decide what their carrer path might be.

Explorer Reports
When writing your Explorer reports, please make sure your informational 5-paragraph essay addresses the following points:
- What was your explorers goal? (Why were they exploring? What were they looking for?)
- Who (what country) were they exploring for?
- What did they explore?
- When did they explore?
- Tell their story! (Make it interesting! Write a story that someone wants to read!)
- optional: If it's part of their story, tell how they died!
- Story structure! (This is a 5-paragraph essay [minimum]. You must have an introductory paragraph and a conclusion.
- This is not and opinion piece. Avoid writing in the 1st Person (1st person uses the word "I" because the author is telling the story). Instead, use 3rd Person (3rd person uses he, she, it, etc...) Here is a great resource that explains the differences and how to use them correctly: http://www.mesacc.edu/~paoih30491/PointofView.html

Obviously, the second column of the math homework is complicated. I spot checked a few problems, but they all must have come from the first column. Don't worry about the second column, we'll cover that soon! Thanks and sorry! -Mr. Rolley
